How does EMSELLA® Work?

While urinary incontinence does often appear as a part of aging, it can also affect younger women. The muscles which span the bottom of the pelvis and support the pelvic organs are known as the pelvic floor muscles. When these muscles are strengthened, they can adequately support your pelvic organs and give you control over your bladder and bowel. When these muscles are weak, the pelvic organs lack proper support and ultimately lead to difficulty controlling the release of urine.

EMSELLA® utilizes electromagnetic energy to deliver thousands of supramaximal contractions to these pelvic floor muscles in a single session. The stimulation leads to regained control over the pelvic floor muscles and bladder, ultimately leading to the improvement of urinary incontinence.

What can I Expect to Experience During my Treatment?

The EMSELLA®—sometimes called the Kegel Throne—is shaped like a chair. To receive treatment, you simply sit on the chair, fully clothed, and the provider will turn on the device. She will instruct you on how to position yourself on the chair so that you feel the contractions in the correct spot on your pelvic floor. During your first treatment, the provider will stay in the room during the treatment to ensure that you are comfortable and to answer any questions that you may have. She will also control the intensity of the treatment to maximize the results.

During the treatment you will experience tingling and pelvic floor muscle contractions. Although you will feel it, most patients do not describe the procedure to be painful. The ability to control the intensity also allows you time to get used to the sensation.

Since this treatment is completely non-invasive, you will be able to stand up and resume all daily activities immediately afterwards with no downtime or recovery! You may observe improvement after a single session, and results will typically continue to improve over the next few weeks. Most patients require 6 sessions, booked twice a week for 3 weeks. Regular quarterly maintenance is recommended to retain your results.

After your Treatment

• You may experience mild tingling, fatigued muscle and possible tenderness in the area following your treatment.
• After the treatment, any soreness or tenderness in the area may last 24-48 hours.
• Some women may experience mild bleeding following treatment.
